Not far from Greatroot lies a peaceful pond surrounded by reeds, flowers and enormous lily pads.
This is Croaker’s Pond.
During the day, frogs leap between the lily pads and disappear beneath the cool water.
But when evening comes…
the pond becomes very noisy.
CROAK! CROAK! CROAK!
Generations of frogs have lived here.
And according to one very old Tale, Croaker’s Pond was also home to one of Paimus’s most unusual creatures.
A Paimul that could swim like a frog…
leap higher than any ordinary frog…
fly on two little dragon wings.
His name was Ace.
Ace desperately wanted to croak like the other frogs.
He tried.
And tried.
And tried again.
But whenever Ace took a deep breath and tried to croak…
PUFF!
Out came smoke. But, where there’s smoke there’s ….
FIRE
The other frogs tried to help him.
But nothing worked.
Ace simply couldn’t croak.
Then came a winter unlike any Croaker’s Pond had seen before.
The pond froze.
The frogs slept beneath the ice.
And when spring finally arrived…
the ice didn’t melt.
Ace’s strange fire — the very thing that had made him different — became the one thing that could save his friends.
He breathed in.
He breathed out.
Again.
And again.
Until finally…
WHOOSH!
The ice began to melt.
Ace never learned to croak.
He learned something much more important.
He didn’t have to.
And even today, when the frogs of Croaker’s Pond begin their evening chorus…
some say the Tale of Ace is still remembered.
But that isn’t the end of Croaker’s Pond.
Because beyond the lily pads…
beyond the reeds…
and beyond the places where the frogs usually swim…
the water continues.
It becomes narrower.
Deeper.
And darker.
The reeds grow so thick that almost no light reaches the water.
Then the channel disappears between two enormous walls of ancient stone.
What lies beyond them?
No Tale explains it.
No Paimul ever returned with an answer.
And although Owlix travelled farther across Paimus than almost anyone…
not even Owlix knows what lies beyond Croaker’s Pond.
Perhaps nothing does.
Perhaps something does.
But somewhere beyond those reeds…
another Tale may already be waiting.
Then there’s another side of the Tale waiting for you…
